Ambient Air Quality

Ambient air quality testing is essential to know the quality standards at the premises. It helps to protect human health and the environment which can be affected by poor air quality.

Find out if the area in your locality is safe or not.

Know your Air Quality

 – According to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the report produced by TERI, Mumbai and the adjoining areas of Navi Mumbai and Thane have ‘poor to severe’ air quality from 2013 – 14. The AQI (Average Quality Index) was poor in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai due to increased Particulate Matter (2.5 and 10).

 – Sulphurs, Nitrogen compounds, oxides, VOCs, and bioaerosols are majorly found which have to be controlled. This is possible only when we can monitor the levels of pollution regularly and/or on the real-time basis.

 – Maharashtra is the state with most registered vehicles, the pollution levels crossing the charts in Mumbai, which alone has 13 – 15% of the state’s population.

 – Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and associated organizations have identified the highest amount of pollution levels in Mumbai and areas around it.

*[Data obtained from MPCB website for the month of October 2017]

Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) – 217 micrograms/cubic metre (Permissible Limits – 146 micrograms / cubic metre.

Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) – 118 micrograms/cubic metre (Permissible Limits – 88 micrograms / cubic metre.

Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) – 233 micrograms/cubic metre (Permissible Limits – 173 micrograms / cubic metre.

Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) – 124 micrograms/cubic metre (Permissible Limits – 107 micrograms / cubic metre.

The organization has also identified sources and reasons that lead to the continuous rise in the Pollution Levels in Mumbai –

  • Poor Quality of Fuel
  • Old Process and Technology
  • Wrong Siting of Industries
  • Lack of Preventive steps during Early Industrialization
  • Poor Vehicle Design
  • Increased On-Road Vehicles
  • Lack of Preventive Laws against Pollution in Small/Medium Scale Industries
  • Poor/Negligible Compliance with the Standards

Sensitive areas like Schools, Colleges, Hospitals where the level of immunity is lesser than that found in healthy adults. Such places have to regularly conduct Ambient Air Quality Testing to maintain the quality and safety.
